Q: Who else is supporting the Shelter Project?

The Camden Wollondilly Domestic Violence Committee initiated the establishment of a Shelter in 2016. Members of the Committee are representatives of community sector organisations that support women and families experiencing domestic violence, homelessness and disadvantage. Organisations include: Macarthur Women’s Court Advocacy Service (Convenor), the DV Committee is auspiced by Macarthur Legal Centre, NSW Police, NSW Department Housing, South Western Sydney Area Health Centrelink, Camden and Wollondilly Councils WILMA Women’s Health Centre,…Benevolent Society for Women and Children’s Health, Baptist Care, Big Yellow Umbrella Community Links Wellbeing, Mothers Hubbard’s Cupboard, .. Q: What is Blue Wren House - Camden Women’s Shelter?

Camden Women's Shelter will provide safe, supported accommodation (for up to 3 months) for women and children in times of homelessness or escaping domestic violence. Camden Council is supportive of the initiative and has offered the Board a 20 year lease on a 3 bedroom cottage. The cottage is in poor condition however community response to a ‘shout out’ for support and trades has been amazing. Thanks to the generosity of our community the Board is able to not only proceed with the refurbishment of the cottage, but also construct a 2 bedroom secondary dwelling at the rear of the cottage. Up to 5 women and their children will be housed each night.

Q: Why is a shelter needed in the area?

Camden/Wollondilly LGA’s do not currently have any medium-term accommodation support other than a woman being given a few nights at a motel.
